Picturing a race weekend at the Monster Mile often includes visions of cars roaring down the track at 170 mph, fans camped out in the RV lots, free concerts in The Grove, and of course… the food! Back in January, Dover International Speedway asked for fans’ help with one of the most crucial elements of race weekend: what to serve at concession stands. The Monster Chef Contest saw entries from across the country with submissions like Redneck Sushi Rolls, High Octane Pizza and BBQ Pulled Pork. Seventy-three entries were narrowed down to just four finalists to face off at Dover’s Daytona 500 Watch Party on Feb. 21.

The four finalists included Pimento Cheese Wontons, Miles’ Buffalo Chicken Sliders, Monster Cheesesteak Egg Rolls and Miles’ Monster Mild Chili. Each dish was prepared by Dover Downs’ chefs for a panel of celebrity judges that included Matt Pencek, Sports Director at WBOC-TV out of Dover and Salisbury, Md.; Brian K. Hall of K107.7-FM out of Salisbury, Md. and Chef Mike Daniels of Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. After much deliberation, the judges selected the Monster Cheesesteak Egg Rolls submitted by Jim Weigand of Burlington, N.J. as the winning dish. Weigand and his family have been attending races at the Monster Mile for more than 20 years.
“Like every lap at the Monster Mile, I wanted to amp up the intensity of my submission for this contest by taking a popular regional dish and turning it into something fun and innovative,” said Weigand. “My inspiration came from my college days in Philadelphia and eating the many great cheesesteaks in the city.”

For Weigand, food and racing go hand-in-hand. “Food brings everyone together,” he said. “At the track, it is a big part of a great day with family and friends. Great food enhances the experience at any sporting event.”
In addition to having the Cheesesteak Egg Rolls appear on race weekend, the grand prize for the contest also included race tickets, pit passes, free meals on raceday, and a story in the souvenir program. Weigand’s dish will be sold at select Dover International Speedway concession stands on race weekend.
