The first on-track action of the fall race weekend at Dover International Speedway is officially in the books, as things kicked off with a Friday morning practice session in preparation for Sunday’s “Citizen Soldier 400” NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.

The overnight showers quit and the track dried just in time for the drivers to turn laps on the Monster Mile, with Kyle Larson running the fastest lap at 21.742 seconds (165.578 mph). He was followed by Carl Edwards, Matt Kenseth, Ryan Newman and all-time Dover wins leader Jimmie Johnson.
The practice run was a promising one for Larson, as he currently sits at 12th in the standings, only five points ahead of Austin Dillon and Jamie McMurray for the final spot in the second round of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Dillon and McMurray ran the ninth and 16th fastest times, respectively, in the first practice.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers return to the track for group qualifying this afternoon at 3:40 p.m. to set the starting lineup for the first elimination race in the 2016 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
