Approximately 40 Speedway employees worked together in assembly-line fashion to produce 3,000 food backpacks in about three hours for children in Kent and Sussex counties. The Food Bank of Delaware distributes backpacks to an average of 5,000 children per week.

The bundles, which included milk, juice, beef stew, apple sauce, cereal and more, will be distributed in the next week. This was the second consecutive year that Speedway employees volunteered at the Milford location.

“I wouldn’t be able to do my job if not for volunteer groups like this,” said Lyndsay Humphreys, a Food Bank of Delaware volunteer coordinator. “There’s always a need all year long.”

The Food Bank of Delaware distributes food through a network of 575 Hunger Relief Partners, which include schools, churches, daycares and other nonprofit organizations that provide assistance to those in need.

In the 2015-2016 school year, the Food Bank of Delaware distributed more than 7 million pounds of food through all three First State counties.

Volunteers donated more than 46,000 hours at Food Bank sites last year, which is the equivalent of more than 20 full-time staffers.

Individuals or groups looking to volunteer at Delaware’s two distribution centers in Milford or Newark can register by visiting www.fbd.volunteerhub.com. Call the Milford branch at (302) 424-3301 or the Newark branch at (302) 292-1305 for more information.
