DOVER, Del. – Dover International Speedway employees and volunteers were cheering for their fellow teammate Jim Hurley this past weekend. Hurley is not a NASCAR driver and didn’t compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) race Sunday, but he was recognized for his unfailing work ethic and dedication by being named this year’s ServiceMaster Clean Extra Mile Award recipient at the Speedway.
Hurley has been part of the Monster Mile team since the facility opened in 1969, and has only missed three events, due to illness, throughout his 43 years with the track. He originally came on board as a firefighter, and then became crew chief of the turn four fire truck. Hurley was part of the first rescue company at the track, as well.
In 2005, Hurley became the logistics coordinator for the Dover International Speedway Emergency Services team and maintains that position today.
“In essence, Jim is the one that ensures the track is ready for each event,” said Ed Klima, director of emergency services and loss control at Dover International Speedway. “He’s been an invaluable member of our team since the track opened in 1969. We are thrilled to present him with this honor.”
Today, as the logistics coordinator, Hurley oversees a staff of 12 year-round employees to maintain the entire race track. He and his crew maintain and repair the SAFER wall system; coordinate track cleaning and maintenance for every race; order and maintain all equipment for track safety and restoration crews; and even work to make sure 200-plus race weekend staffers and volunteers are fed each event day.
Since its inception in 2010, the ServiceMaster Clean ExtraMile Award has recognized 29 track team members across the country. The award recipients can be any member of the track staff and volunteers who work in a service-oriented position. Track management personnel select the winner.
Each award winner’s name is engraved on a plaque that is displayed at the track where the individual works or volunteers. A personal plaque also is presented to recipients during their track’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race weekend.
“Mr. Hurley is an excellent representative of everything the Extra Mile Award stands for and recognizes,” said Jim Wassell, chief marketing officer for ServiceMaster Clean. “Just reading about his work ethic and loyalty, as well as how he has literally worked his way up through the ranks at the speedway, exhibits some of the key qualities ServiceMaster Clean hopes to spotlight each time we team up with one of our partner tracks. The show would probably not go on without Mr. Hurley and his team, so I am sure when we say thank you for your hard work and congratulations, every person out there attending or watching the race this weekend at Dover, reciprocates that exact sentiment.”
Just like a ServiceMaster Clean caution signals a call for quick and professional action by the ServiceMaster track services team and equipment on the race track, it’s the same when you call 866RECOVER if disaster strikes your home or business. It means cleaning and restoration is going to be done quickly and professionally by America’s number one cleaning team.
ServiceMaster Clean is in its fourth season as the official sponsor of caution periods at 21 International Speedway Corp. (ISC), Speedway Motorsports Inc. (SMI) and Dover International Speedway tracks.
