Menard faster than field in first practice of weekend at Monster Mile

Over the past several years, the same list of names has cropped up at the top of the finishing order at Dover International Speedway. But there might be a newcomer on the scene on this fall 2011 weekend.

It’s Paul Menard, who ran the fastest lap in Friday morning’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice session for Sunday’s AAA 400. Menard, who’s only finished in the top 10 once in eight starts at Dover, circled the Monster Mile in 23.073 seconds for an average speed of 156.027 mph. The fastest lap came on his 32nd and final lap of the practice session.

Menard has never started higher than ninth at Dover, which he did in the fall race a year ago.

Matt Kenseth was second fastest at 155.986 mph, followed by Carl Edwards at 155.891 mph. Both of those drivers, as well as the next three quickest in the practice – Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson – have all had great degrees of success at Dover.

Happy Hour comes up later this afternoon at 2:40 p.m.
