Moffitt posts top speed in final “JEGS 200” practice session

Brett Moffitt earned the fastest speed during Thursday’s practice sessions for the “JEGS 200” NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Dover International Speedway.

Moffitt, the driver of the No. 16 Toyota turned a lap of 158.082 mph to lead the 34 entrants for Friday’s race.

Noah Gragson (No. 18 Toyota) posted a lap of 156.767 mph, while defending Dover Truck Series winner Johnny Sauter was third fastest with a lap of 155.353 mph.

Stewart Friesen, the driver of the No. 52 Chevrolet, turned a lap of 155.797 to lead Thursday’s first practice session.

The father-son duo of David and Todd Gilliland also hit the track during the first hour-long practice. Todd (No. 4 Chevrolet) turned a lap of 153.231 mph while David (No. 54 Toyota) registered a speed of 151.681 mph. It is the first time the two Gillilands will be competing in the same race.

“It’s obviously super special,” David Gilliland said. “Nothing’s been like this in my career. This is one of my favorite race tracks so it’s a special weekend.”

“It’s cool,” Todd added, “but we’re still trying to beat each other. With [my dad’s] experience on the track, he’s someone good to lean on.”

The “JEGS 200” takes the green flag on Friday at 5 p.m. Qualifying is Friday at 1:05 p.m.

The track qualifying record in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series belongs to Ryan Blaney, who turned a lap of 158.465 mph on May 29, 2015.
