Chooses Both Dover Races For 2003 Top 10 Most Exciting List
Release date: December 30, 2003
DOVER, DE - Over the last few years, many of the journalists attending races at Dover International Speedway have remarked that the races held on the Monster Mile are among the most competitive in all of NASCAR. The one-mile concrete surface seems to have settled into itself and Goodyear has come up with a winning tire formula. The result? Highly competitive races and great action right down to the last lap of virtually every race.
That winning formula was confirmed with the recent Top 10 Races of 2003 feature story on the NASCAR.com web site in which the reporting staff of NASCAR.com selected their favorite races of the year. Six Winston Cup (NEXTEL Cup starting in 2004) races were chosen, as well as three Busch Series races and one Craftsman Truck Series race. Of the six Winston Cup events, the two races at Dover were selected. So, it’s official - Dover International Speedway may be a monster of a track, but it also puts on one of the best shows in the sport.
“We’re thrilled that NASCAR.com selected both of our races from this past season as two of the best,” said Denis McGlynn, president and CEO of Dover Motorsports, Inc. “We’ve felt for many years our track lends itself to great racing. When we added concrete to the equation, we also hoped to further that scenario. Thanks to the quality of the Goodyear tires, we've seen our track develop as many as three grooves in the turns and much more passing for the lead.”
In fact, NASCAR syndicated writer Don Coble told Dover International Speedway PR Director John Dunlap that the two races at Dover had a far higher percentage of passes on the track than the national average and were his choices for two of the best of the year. To have races won on the track versus in the pits is the dream of every speedway and its fans.
NEXTEL Cup star Ryan Newman won both races in 2003, but not without having to put up a fight. In the June MBNA Armed Forces Family 400, Newman and Tony Stewart got into a battle when Newman would not allow Stewart to unlap himself after the latter had incurred a penalty lap for pitting inches outside his pit stall. Newman then had to hold off Jeff Gordon, Stewart and Bobby Labonte in a late restart - all the while Newman was racing with no power steering. In the September MBNA America 400 race Stewart, Gordon and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. took turns exchanging the lead for most of the race until Newman made his way back to the front and held off Jeremy Mayfield in a stirring duel over the last 25 laps.
Two great races, two memorable weekends. Look for more in 2004, June 4-6 and September 24-26.
