Gander RV 400: Top speeds abound during first practice

The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers were back on Dover International Speedway on Friday, and did not take long to make a big impression.

Twenty-three drivers topped the track’s qualifying speed record of 164.444 mph (set by Brad Keselowski in 2014), led by Kurt Busch (No. 1, Chevrolet) with a speed of 168.444 mph.

Keselowski is still the official record holder, at least until today’s 3:40 p.m. qualifying single-car session which will set the field for Sunday’s “Gander RV 400” Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at the Monster Mile.

“There’s no question you feel that it’s fast,” said Kyle Busch, who was 11th quickest in practice. “It’s going to be big numbers for qualifying and we’ll see how that translates to the race.”

Kyle Larson (No. 42, Chevrolet) was second with a speed of 168.106 mph, followed by Kevin Harvick (167.950 mph), William Byron (167.645 mph) and Ryan Blaney (167.645 mph).
