Martin Truex Jr places second at Dover International Speedway

Martin Truex Jr finished second in the Drydene 311 at Dover International Speedway on Saturday.

Truex’s top-five finish, the ninth time he has achieved that result this year, added 50 points to his season total. Truex is now fifth in the NASCAR Cup Series standings with 803 points.

Truex started in third position and led 88 laps in the race, holding the lead a total of two times. The 17th-year driver has secured 27 career victories, with 110 top-five finishes and 219 results inside the top 10.

Victory Lane at Dover International Speedway is a familiar place for Truex, who has three career wins at the track. His second-place finish also marks the seventh time he has finished in the top five at Dover and his 16th top-10.

The Mayetta, New Jersey native’s starting and finishing positions compared favorably to his career averages, starting 13 spots higher than his career mark of 15.6 and completing the race 15 places ahead of his 17.1 career average finish.

Truex’s second-place finish was against 40 other drivers. The race endured four cautions and 21 caution laps. Prior to the checkered flag there were 15 lead changes.

Denny Hamlin finished first in the race, followed by Truex’s second-place finish. Kyle Busch crossed the finish line third, Kevin Harvick brought home fourth place, and Chase Elliott closed the top five.

In addition to earning a race victory, Hamlin won the first two stages to complete a dominant day in Dover.
