Jimmie Johnson, the 11-time Dover winner and seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, registered the quickest lap during Saturday’s final practice session for Sunday’s “Gander RV 400” Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Dover International Speedway.
Johnson turned a lap in 22.241 seconds (161.863 mph), well off the speeds posted Friday during the Cup Series’ first practice and qualifying, when Chase Elliott set a track record of 165.960 mph.
Johnson (No. 48, Chevrolet) will start 12th in Sunday’s “Gander RV 400,” which is scheduled to take the green flag Sunday at 2 p.m. Johnson’s last Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory came at Dover in Spring 2017.
“I know I’m biased but I think this track we visit,” Johnson said. “I saw a lot of drivers on social media looking forward to coming to Dover. I think we all appreciate the challenge this place provides.”
Two-time Dover winner Martin Truex Jr. had the second highest speed at 161.718 mph, followed by Erik Jones, Kyle Larson and Aric Almirola.
